Causes and Characteristics of Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)


Human beings living people to society. Not a day without a society for everyone. Sometimes in social life, feeling nervous and anxious in the new social environment is a natural thing. But even so, it turns around us there are some people who tend to avoid social life. It is called Social Phobia.

Social phobia or better known as Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is a disorder in humans which is anxiety, nervousness or excessive fear in the social environment.

Social anxiety disorder can occur as a result of mental health disorders on a person, which are caused by problems in the social environment or heredity.

Causes of Social anxiety disorder:

1. Heredity or genetics
People can be affected by SAD caused because getting from family members who are also experiencing SAD. So if the people affected by SAD due to heredity / genetics can be known when still a child when it will enter the social world.

2. Environment
Besides heredity / genetic, people can also be affected by SAD due to environmental influences, in particular because of trauma in the social environment. Social trauma is like; excommunicated / bullied in the environment, experienced a tragedy that caused embarrassment highly etc, which causes people to become trauma / fear of the social environment.

3. Self (Psychology)
Ourselves, more especially psychologically. People can experience SAD because it has always been self-deprecating thoughts, lack of self-confidence and have a timid nature.

Characteristics of Social anxiety disorder :
  1. Feeling uneasy being in crowded places.
  2. Fearful / anxious to meet new people.
  3. Always feel afraid in situations where being considered / assessed / at the judge.
  4. Fearing embarrass himself.
  5. Fearing that others will see the fear / anxiety.
  6. Avoiding which will be the center of attention.
  7. Avoiding social activities, even though it looks fun social activity.
  8. Evade / hide when guests are not yet known to come home.
  9. Fear / anxiety calls from people not known.
  10. Fear of looking at people.
  11. It is hard to talk in a social environment.
